Strength in Numbers – Maribor

The St. Martin’s Day celebration in Maribor is the largest open-air celebration of its kind anywhere in Slovenia. Every year the event brings together several thousand visitors who enjoy traditional Styrian wine and cuisine.

The Mariborsko Pohorje ski centre offers more than 41.5km of well-kept slopes for all kind of skiers, from beginners to experts.

The original Maribor Castle that stood on Pyramid hill was built at the beginning of the 12th Century.

During Maribor’s year as European Capital of Culture 2012, the city hosted 5,230 cultural events and was visited by 2,040,000 visitors.

The Lent Festival, with its main stage on the banks of the Drava river, is annually attended by around 500,000 people.

According to various media commentators, over the past few years Maribor has become one of the Top 10 tourist destinations in the world that one should visit at least once in one’s lifetime.

The Vinag tunnel cellar has over 2km of underground corridors.

This year Maribor is one of the 16 European cities in 2018 to hold the title ‘European City of Sport’.

Each year no more than a hundred bottles are filled with the wine from the oldest vine in the world that grows in Maribor. Queen Elizabeth II., Pope John Paul II. and the former USA president Bill Clinton are some of the recipients of this unique wine.
