At the turn of the 20th century, a new architectural style appeared in Ljubljana under the direct influence of Viennese Secession and Grand Hotel Union was designed in this mentioned style, Art Nouveau style – the entire building, its facade and interior furnishings.
The Grand Hotel Union is to be returned back to the past with new sets of renovation, the Art Nouveau style of the facade and all the interior design will remain present and highlighted.
Functionally, technologically and a structurally demanding building, already had an electric circuit, central heating, elevator and other modern technical devices. The facade was decorated with balconies, with its Art Nouveau fence made by ironwork over the main and quoin entrance, its decoration is composed by historical garlands, cartouche, floral patterns and feminine masks.
Art Nouveau decoration is more emphatic in the hotel’s interior. Typical winding Art Nouveau lines do revise on the ceiling, walls and its furnishing. Initially the hotel was decorated by a rich collection of Art Nouveau etch glass, which were made in Czech workshop named Rechwald. Today the originals are replaced by copies, while the originals are kept in the National Museum of Slovenia.
